I have always been fascinated by bees. Those tiny, golden creatures that flit from flower to flower, silently sustaining our entire food system. There is something magical about watching them work - a perfectly orchestrated dance of nature that has fascinated humans for thousands of years.
This spring, I am embarking on a journey that has been calling to me for years: becoming a beekeeper. And I could not be more excited.
Why Beekeeping?
Beyond the obvious appeal of fresh, local honey - and let me tell you, there is nothing quite like tasting honey from your own hive - bees are essential pollinators that support our entire food ecosystem. According to the USDA, bees pollinate approximately 80% of flowering plants and one-third of the food we eat.
By keeping bees, I am not just producing honey. I am contributing to my community food security, supporting local biodiversity, and participating in a tradition that dates back to ancient Egypt.
Meet my farmer
After months of research, I found my perfect partner in this journey: AMES Farms in Delano, Minnesota. This local supplier has an outstanding reputation in the beekeeping community, known for healthy, thriving colonies and exceptional customer support.
On May 2nd, I will be taking their comprehensive beekeeping class to learn the fundamentals - everything from hive management to harvesting
honey. I will be starting with a nuc (nucleus colony) package, which gives me a head start compared to starting from scratch with a package.
What is Ahead
Over the next few months, I will be sharing this journey with you: weekly updates from the hive, lessons learned (and there will be mistakes - I am sure of it), honey recipes and uses, and tips for aspiring beekeepers.
Whether you are a fellow aspiring beekeeper, someone interested in sustainable living, or just curious about the world of bees, I hope you will join me on this sweet journey.
The bees are waiting. And so am I.
